Mitten Tree, December 1-24, 2019

During the month of December a Mitten Tree was in the sanctuary, to gather gifts of care for people served by the Cluster. There was a special opportunity to add items during the Christmas Eve service. Suggestions included hats, scarves, mittens etc. Since the Cluster sets people up with housing, small household items would also be appreciated – things like paper towels, dishtowels, hot pads, salt and pepper, wooden spoons, tissues, hand sanitizers: all those little “daily blessings” that seem inexpensive until you need them all at once. Also, non-perishable holiday foods in cans or packages. Items that can’t be easily nestled in the branches can be placed in colorful bags or bins at the foot of the tree. The items can be new, gently used, or hand made. You did such a great job with the much-appreciated knitted items, that there are unlikely to be any left – but if you have extras, they would be welcome!

What is after will be better                           Speaker: Reverend Kerry Mueller

This is the first in a series called The Spiral of Compassion. We will look closely at compassion, which is a powerful element in every religion. Come and think about what compassion means and how we can cultivate it in ourselves and our communities.

Sympathy for the Grinch          Lay Speaker:Emily Quarles-Mowrer

The day after Halloween, there was a motorized Santa climbing up and down a ladder in my local Target to the tune of “Santa Claus is Coming to Town.” We go directly from pumpkin spice lattes to Lexus’s December to remember and we are expected to believe that it is “The Most Wonderful Time of the Year.” Perhaps the Grinch had a point about the “Noise! Noise! NOISE! NOISE!”

Join us as we try to remember the joy in a secular Christmas.

Please join us for our Third Sunday Potluck which will follow the service.

Speaker: Reverend Dave Hunter The Liberation of God & the Empowerment of Humanity: A Yuletide Exploration in Metaphorical Theology
Would we like to go back to that mythical golden age when God took care of all our needs? I don’t think so. And it’s not going to happen.

4pm Christmas Eve Service, Tuesday, December 24, 2019

Speaker: Reverend Kerry Mueller
Come enjoy a Christmas Eve service for all ages and all theologies. A good story, lots of singing, and a chance to share with those less fortunate. Oh, and a special amusement for those with a philosophical turn of mind! Please bring something for the Mitten Tree.
(See the Mitten Tree article for suggestions)
