Welcome!

Speaker: Rev. Dave Farrington

As in years past we expect to be welcoming new members into our community today, Palm Sunday. The tradition can be traced at least to the first century when Jesus was welcomed to Jerusalem and, as we shall learn next week, elements of it go to Roman times and earlier.

Today Rev. Dave will talk about the meaning of membership and join in the welcoming of a new member.

Project Youth

Speaker: Rev. Dave Farrington

Reminded of an old friend and colleague by the same name as our ill guest speaker, Rev. Dave will give a sermon entitled “Project Youth” of which Art Devlin and his co-defendant were co-creators. Project Youth became a model by which incarcerated felons spent time with youngsters who had criminal charges pending. It was a success heralded by judges in Boston, then all of Massachusetts and ultimately the country and the world. “Scared Straight” was a highly corrupted copy that became more widely known than the original program. The sermon will include a comparison of Project Youth with Scared Straight.

Living with Grace

Speaker: Emily Quarles-Mowrer

In its entry on the history of the Unitarian Universalist movement, Wikipedia says, “Despite its name, this denomination does not necessarily promote either belief in one God, or universal salvation.” While it is true that we do not hold our members to specific beliefs, I would argue that the aim of our seven principles, to create a peaceful and just world community, is its own form of Universalism. Join us as we compare Philip Gulley and James Mulholland’s book on modern Christian universalism, “If Grace is True,” to our Unitarian Universalist beliefs on justice, equity, compassion and encouragement to spiritual growth.

Third Sunday Potluck will follow the service.

Five Smooth Stoners198px-David_and_Goliath_by_Caravaggio

Speaker: Rev. Dave Farrington

The great 20th century Unitarian Universalisttheologian, James Luther Adams, used the story of David confronting Goliath as a metaphor for the foundational beliefs of Unitarian Universalism. Rev. Dave will explore these beliefs today. If you’ve wanted an introduction to UUism this is the perfect sermon and time.

Lay Leader: Mary Ryan

OK, it’s not what you think. We’re talking about whales. Killer whales. Last year, on her trip to Antarctica, Mary had the amazing experience of spending several hours with a family of six Killer Whales as they were on a chase for a meal.

Since then, she’s found out much more about these intelligent, curious and loyal animals. She’ll share some of that along with pictures and video from the chase.
