One change that has already occurred is that locks have been added to the office and conference rooms. Another change is that a new multi-handset phone system has been purchased. This new system now enables us to have phone access in the RE room, Nurse-ry, kitchen and other locations so that in the case of an emergency, alerts can be sent throughout the building. In addition, calls to emergency personnel can now be made from multiple sites within the building. Lastly, first aid kits are now available in the nursery and RE room and a tourniquet has been added to the first aid kit in the kitchen. While these may seem like small changes, you can see the large impact that these changes have. 

The new RE Committee has met and it is heartening to see how many people are willing to help out with either serving as a substitute teacher or just filling in to teach arts and crafts. This enables our teacher, Ruby Barnthouse to take a break when needed. Thank you to all who participated.

Minister’s Column, October 2019

In October we will be attending the fall conference of UURMAPA – the UU Retired Ministers and Partners Association. (Retired? Ha, you say, retired? But that’s a question for another day.) One of the workshops is about giving away books. A workshop I should have taken several times over. In our bedroom are two tall bookcases. (In addition to the ones in the hall, the sunporch, the living room, both studies, and the mud room). My favorite books are in the bedroom, one case of unread novels, and one of read novels that I can’t bring myself to pass on yet. Unlike Dave, I thrive on fiction – I don’t read a lot of “improving” books. Secretly, of course I believe that novels do improve us, giving us extra chances to live different lives vicariously and expanding our sense of empathy in the process. “No amount of argument will change anyone’s mind. It takes a good story to do that.”*

So let me share a few books I have read this summer, books that have helped be become myself, only more so.

The Overstory by Richard Powers, a story about the relationship of humans and trees. Hard to read because it’s 500 pages of small, gray print, and hard because it looks unflinchingly at looming extinctions.

An American Marriage by Tayari Jones. Lives of African Americans in the South, dealing with the fallout from a miscarriage of justice. Powerful, it reads like a novelization of Bryan Stevenson’s Just Mercy.

The Price of a Child by Lorene Cary. An enslaved woman frees herself in pre-civil war Philadelphia. Nuanced and honest, it shows a truth white folks may find difficult even as we identify strongly with the protagonist, Mercer.

The Book of M by Peng Shepherd. An apocalyptic science fiction novel beginning with an unexplained plague of memory loss. Questions of reality and identity.

President’s Message, October 2019

To me, October is a month filled with the beauty of nature. So, this month I’d like to celebrate the beauty we find within our fellowship.

First, let’s talk about some people who do some beautiful things for us. We all know that Ruby Barndthouse was generous enough to volunteer to conduct RE classes over the summer and she did an outstanding job. For that she deserves a big shout-out. I’m happy to report that Ruby has agreed to serve as our RE teacher on a more permanent basis. Ruby has been a member of the UU faith for her entire life, so she has a great understanding as to how to ground the children of the fellowship in the UU Principles while still having some fun. Ruby will need some help though. Miranda Van Horn has volunteered to assist in putting together a RE Committee. She is looking for some volunteers to be part of the committee. If anyone is interested, please contact Miranda.

Now let’s talk about the ongoing beautification of our building and grounds. We have the final drawings for the sanctuary windows from the architect and are currently requesting bids for the work. Another project that is being addressed is the leak in the hall closet by the back entrance. A roofing consultant came out to inspect the roof and the good news is that the roof is still in good shape and, barring any unforeseen circumstances that directly impact the roof, it should last us for another 5-10 years (our bank account is very grateful!). All we need to focus on is repairing the closet. If there are any frustrated “Handypersons” out there who are looking for a project and want to take it on or help out, please contact Jon Price. Lastly, come one, come all to participate in our Fall Clean-up, which is scheduled for Saturday, October 12 from 10AM to 1PM. Any help is appreciated as we continue to keep our little part of the world beautiful.

I’ll close with a friendly reminder about “closing.” We recently had a situation where the fellowship was left unlocked and doors were left open. This was probably due to a simple mistake of the last handful of people in the building who each assumed that another person would lock up. So please remember that if you are one of the last people in the building, please check with the others to confirm who will lock up. Also remember that the “Last to Leave Checklist” is by each exit. Thank you for your attention to this which will help to keep out beautiful building safe and sound.
