Hurricanes, Wildfires, Floods, oh my! An Amateur’s Guide to Climate Change Lay Speaker: Mary Ryan
Climate change is real. We see it every day and it’s making some
parts of the world unlivable already. Mary will discuss things she’s
learned over the last few years on the climate and maybe some ideas
about what we can do. Hopefully, there will be discussion to follow.

What This UU Believes. Rev. Dave Hunter. View via Zoom.
UU’s are creedless; beliefs aren’t key for us; we’re not required or expected to believe alike; but still people want to know what we UU’s believe, and despite our protests, common beliefs are important for us, our seven principles aren’t enough.

A Virtual Gathering of the Waters. Rev Kerry Mueller, Emily Quarles-Mowrer, Mary Ryan. View via Zoom.

In these pandemic months we long to regather as a community of faith. For now, we do this virtually, adapting our traditional water service to the wonders of electronic communication. Please send photos of the waters in your life to worship @uupottstown.org, and think about how
you would like to tell us what it means to you.
This service will be presented by the Worship Committee, Rev. Kerry Mueller, and YOU.

Our Annual Ingathering Service, Gathering of the Waters, will not be the same this year, as we will not be gathering in person but “virtually”.
The water we collected (or forgot about collecting) during the past year will be represented by photos sent in to our Worship Committee. Help to make this year special by sending in photos of water that have a special meaning for you.

On Ingathering Sunday, you will be able to relate where the water is
from and what it means to you.
Please send your water pics to worship@uupottstown.org

UUFP Quarterly Report: September 2020

We’re at the beginning of our fiscal year and predictably our expenses are down.  July itself was not really strong, due to the COVID-19 situation we are in the midst of, but we’re still doing OK.  Our pledge/Income is exceeding our expenses because our expenses are lower than usual due to not meeting in person and no in person events at UUFP are scheduled.

Our budget for this fiscal year came in ~$10,000 below our wish budget. Thank you to those who pledged and are paying monthly or plan to pay throughout the year. Some are using our online payment methods – see our website, others are paying with bill pay and others are using our mail service. Yes, it is still working well!!  We are still accepting pledges and donations!

We ended our last fiscal year doing OK too. See the bar charts is below. We ended the year $5000 under budget for pledges but due to:   1). decreased committee expenses from COVID-19 from March through June.   2). We have a volunteer RE teacher vs. paid professional teacher (thanks to our volunteer Ruby!)  and 3).  We received $10,250 in donations toward the repair of our sanctuary windows!  We ended up only $230 over budget for expenses for the fiscal year. So, our $5,000 deficit worked itself out.  It is unfortunate that our finances were affected due to no in person activities or in person services at UUFP for 3.5 months.

This year our expenses continue to be lower than usual. The technology team purchased an expanded Wi-Fi for us so our Wi-Fi can now reach the sanctuary for better in person videos or virtual presentations, and it also reaches into the RE wing. The possibility of live streaming is also being considered.

We’re on a different path now and we are hosting virtual events at UUFP: coffee hour every Sunday, activities like BYOB (Book), and Sunday services! Our Beloved Community is coming back!

Please continue to contribute to UUFP’s pledge and donation total for this fiscal year, as strange as it is right now, we do need to support each other so that our programming can build in a new way.

 Thank you, Linda P.

From the Ministers’ Desk — September 2020

You don’t have to agree with our Unitarian Universalist seven principles to consider yourself a UU or even to be a member of a UU congregation. It’s the congregations, not individual members, that “covenant to affirm and promote” them. On the other hand, if you firmly disagreed with them or totally rejected them, why would you want to be one of us?  But you don’t need to answer that.

The point I wish to make is that we (we citizens of the United States) now face the real and present danger that our mostly democratic system of government will be replaced with an authoritarian form. This is obviously in direct opposition to our principle in favor of “the use of the democratic process,” not only “within our congregations,” but also “in society at large;” that is, the United States.  Authoritarianism also denies “the inherent worth and dignity of every person” and conflicts with the goal of “justice, equity, and compassion in human relations.”

I won’t try to present a brief in support of my fear of authoritarianism. The attack on the postal service, just prior to the election, with the pandemic endangering the old-fashioned system of same-day in-person voting is hard to understand otherwise. (And, of course, I’m writing this about two weeks before you’ll read it, and a lot could change during that time.)  My point is that it is our religious duty (as well as our moral and political duty) to oppose the authoritarian threat.

What can we do? Though it may be tempting to hide from frightening news, keep yourself informed–from multiple reliable sources. Share your views with others–family, friends, neighbors, the person next to you in line at the Wawa. How you do this will, of course, depend on who the others are–with some, the best approach might be reasonably modest and innocent questions. And don’t forget letters to the editor and to elected officials. And, then, there are social media. Support organizations–UU and others–working on this, with your time, your talent, your resources.

We live in a difficult time. Take care of yourself, and your family. Eat, sleep, exercise, read something distracting, listen to (or make) music, keep a diary. Be available to others in our fellowship, and be willing to reach out to others. And, remember that your ministers are here for you, probably not in person, but phone and email work.

I almost forgot prayer. How could a minister forget prayer? Share your feelings with God (belief in God not required)–your anger, your fear, your frustration, your hope, your thanks.

Love, Dave
