What Does it Mean to Belong
Guest Speaker: Rev. Kim Wilson, UU Minister

We can learn a lot from members of many Indigenous communities, where from childhood, each person is recognized for their unique and special qualities. These qualities are nurtured and supported by the entire community. Thus, each individual becomes their best self, and learns how to use their gifts to give back to and support the larger community. This morning, we’ll explore this idea of belonging, what it could mean to us and how it connects us to one another.

From Land to Civilization

This will really be the end of the Shackleton epic adventure, taking us from Elephant Island to South Georgia and back. This part is possibly the most exciting of them all.

Halos and Horns
Speaker: Emily Quarles-Mowrer

The halo effect is a form of cognitive bias where a person’s positive opinion about a single characteristic tends to color their reaction toward the whole. An example might be a company labeling its popsicles “gluten-free” to lend them an aura of health, despite their being merely frozen sugar-water. People, too, can acquire the aura of halos or horns. Join us as we think about the ways that snap judgments may be skewing our vision.

One Song: the Science of Unity
Guest Speaker: JD Stillwater

For millennia mystics and prophets have told us that “All is one” and yet we feel
ourselves surrounded by separation, antagonism, and isolation! There are plenty of reasons to conclude instead that “All is horribly splintered.” Were all the mystics naive, or just wrong? Recent advances from mainstream science reveal an underlying integrity, connectedness, and wholism in everything from human bodies to ecosystems to the very fabric of space-time. Even the noble humble dung beetle, star of our service today. In short, science agrees: “All is one.”

Mark Your Calendars!

Our fall clean up party is scheduled for the morning of Saturday, October 8th.
We will need help replacing the fencing around the Fellowship Vegetable Garden, due to a
groundhog invasion; plus the usual weeding and sprucing up of the fellowship.
Please reserve this date as it falls exactly one week before our 55th anniversary party.
Let’s put our best foot forward for this fun, yet significant historic event.

President’s Message — September 2022

“By all the lovely tokens, September days are here, with summers best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.” ~ Helen Hunt Jackson

While we are transitioning from the lazy days of summer to the more energetic (and sometimes frenetic) days of autumn, we continue to be busy here at the fellowship.

Our garden continues to flourish with the harvested crops being donated to the Pottstown Cluster. Unfortunately, the poison ivy is also flourishing (just ask Mary Ryan). So many thanks go out to the Garden Committee for tending to the crops and attempting to keep “those other plants” at bay.

Since we have been able to spend more time in our fellowship, Judy McDonald and I met to revisit the report and the safety recommendations that the PA State Police made prior to the pandemic. We are currently prioritizing the recommendations and creating a “Wish List” of things that we would like to invest in. This will then go to the board to determine what we can move forward with based on available funds.

The Technology Committee (aka Rick Duske) has been busy training others to help with the technology that we use during Sunday Services. Many thanks to those who volunteered. If you have any interest in learning and assisting on Sundays, please let Rick know.

Thanks go out to Miranda Van Horn who led a UU 102 class, which is simply the history of the UUFP. In addition to prospective members, many current members also attended to enhance their knowledge of the story of our fellowship. It is hard to believe that the UUFP has been in existence for 55 years. We will be celebrating this anniversary as well as honoring the life of Peggy Jones, a founding member who passed away last year at a party to be held in October. Stay tuned for further information.

I hope that everyone’s Summer vacations were enjoyable, and I look forward to a great Autumn at the UUFP.

In gratitude, Linda

Of Rope Swings and Letting Go: Why We Need Playfulness
Speaker: Rev. Kim Wilson.
We’ve been taught that play is for children. But the ability to be playful is something that people of all ages benefit from. It’s a way to take ourselves less seriously, to reclaim the freedom to be creative (and sometimes silly!), and even to feel more spiritually connected.
