Talking About Soil on Earth Day Speaker: Rick Rigutto Manager, Charlestown Farm

Lay Leader: Allan Pallay

The planet’s soils deserve our utmost attention and care. They are the basis for a healthy human settlement and will ultimately be a major factor in how the future of our species evolves. Small scale organic farming differs from the methods of agriculture that have come to dominate the past 100 years. In organic farming the soil is seen as a living entity that is the central organ of the entire farm. We try to feed and encourage the soil, to not only supply nutrients for the crops but, to actually grow itself. I do not think it is over the top to say that working with and in the soil is exactly the kind of grounding work we need to bring back some measure of centeredness amidst the chaos of the world.
