NEW MEETING DATE & TIME!!

October 17, 2015 @ 1:30, UUFP

The bookclub welcomes all sleuths at heart to join us on this adventure with Flavia de Luce. All are welcome to join us for lunch and discussion of the book of the month.   We will meet at UUFP, at 1:30 on October 17.

The book club selection  for September is “The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie” by Allen Bradley. Set in the English countryside in 1950, it features Flavia de Luce, an 11-year-old amateur sleuth who pulls herself away from her beloved chemistry lab in order to clear her father in a murder investigation. First-time novelist, Bradley, wrote the book after winning the 2007 Debut Dagger Awardand selling the publishing rights in 3 countries based on the first chapter and a synopsis. Well received by critics as an old -fashioned mystery featuring an unforgettable protagonist, the novel has won multiple awards and is the first in a proposed 10-book series.

Amazon readers gave it a 4.3 out of five star rating. It is available in paperback, Kindle edition and as an audiobook.

For those of us who are prodigious readers (myself included), I would like to pick future books as well. “All the Light We Cannot See” by Anthony Doerr has been recommended for our October/November  meeting. It looks interesting, the story of a blind orphan in war torn Paris. It also is available in several formats and was rated a 4.6 of a possible 5 stars by Amazon readers.

We will discuss future meeting intervals and formats for our meetings at this meeting so please bring your ideas. It has been suggested that we do not read a specific book but rather discuss books we have read and loved.

It is not necessary to have read/finished the book to join us for talk and fun. How can we miss: readers are a powerful force in the universe!!!

Labyrinth Walk

The Labyrinth will be accessible on June 20, 2015 from 2 pm to 6 pm at UUFP

People have used labyrinths for thousands of years as artistic expression, architectural ornamentation, and literary symbolism. As well, people have used labyrinths as spiritual aids or tools. Walking a labyrinth can calm the mind and help the walker manage distracting emotions and stress. Probably the most famous labyrinth is at the Cathedral at Chartres, France which was built during the 13th century.

Spirit in Practice Workshop

Topic: Spiritual Partnerships

Wednesday, May 27 at 7:30pm

One of the things that make Unitarian Universalism unique is that we do not insist that everyone take the same route. Rather, we encourage people to find the path that most suits them. And then we go a step further—at our best, we keep gathering together to discuss what we’ve seen and done on our journeys thus far. In this workshop we will investigate companionship and support in spiritual practices.

We will meet in the conference room.  Please join us!  No registration required.

This is #4 in a series of 10.  These workshops are held once a month.  Keep an eye out for the next one in June!

Between Worlds: the Gifts of Being a Cultural Outsider

Guest Speaker: Jennifer Gittings-Dalton

Lay Leader: CJ Rhoads

Jennifer Gittings-Dalton

What are the creative gifts – and painful costs – that come when you find yourself “outside”  your dominant culture at work, in your community, or among peers? In some settings we all have had the experience of not fitting in. How can we harness that experience in positive ways?

Today, people of different backgrounds are encountering each other as never before, through immigration, travel, and electronic communications. It is a combustible, unprecedented, but highly creative experiment. I grew up a “Third Culture Kid” after a childhood spent in east Asia, and the impact has been lifelong. Now I work with very diverse students and displaced workers at a community college and use the experience I have gained to help them.
