Ministers Musings: A Message during Hard Times in our Country, June 2016

Dear Members and Friends of UUFP,

As it has become increasingly clear this Orlando shooter had mental health challenges and was filled with rage and hate in a broad number of ways, particularly at the gay community. Whether he was troubled by being gay may never be known but his access to assault rifles and  guns is inexcusable for it allowed him to carry out mass executions.

Too many in the conservative religious community like the southern Baptist convention continue their policy of exclusion and hatred, forgetting we are all children of god. They can’t even bring themselves to say the word gay when referring to Pulse, a gay club.

We gay people are objects of derision and hatred on a daily basis . While I want to stand on the side of love as my faith calls me to, I am mad as hell at such pervasive prejudice against gays, people of color and all who are perceived to be different or other.

When do the haters stand down? Apparently never!!!. Which is why those who try to live in love must never give in to hatred. This is a battle for our souls. All people of good conscience must stand up and not cower in the face of hatred. Silence is not a viable option. Take courage, the good people in our society, even as we begin to bury our dead…again!!!

My heart is with the victims and their families but also with the law enforcement officers who risked their own lives to save so many and had to witness such carnage. The psychic toll on all will last a very long time.

I will continue to strive to overcome my anger and  frustration but will not be a victim. I am GAY, OUT and PROUD.

In Faith,

Rev Paul Daniel

A Place For Everything              Speaker: Emily Quarles-Mowrershoechair

When I was a kid, at the start of summer I would give up my cartoons on Saturday mornings to go out “garage sale-ing” with my mom. We often found treasures amongst other people’s trash. I remember thinking, “Who would get rid of a perfectly good [blank]?” You can fill in the blank with anything that a child would want to buy for a quarter. Reading Marie Kondo’s book “The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up” reminds me yet again of the often fraught relationship we have with our things. Please join us as we think about how we decide what things will fill our homes.

Spirituality and Your Connection to the Earth

Guest Speaker: Chara Armon, Ph.D Assistant Professor, Lawrence C. Gallen Teaching Faculty, Villanova University

Lay Leader: Allan Pallay

In recent decades humanity has gained increasing scientific awareness of our dependency on the Earth and the damage we have inflicted on our home planet. Simultaneously, we are reexamining the teachings of the world’s religions and discovering within them ancient recommendations to care for the created world. As we endeavor to address environmental problems and balance our religious and spiritual understandings with scientific realities, how can we most wisely interact with the natural world? What might it mean to live in a flourishing relationship with planet Earth? Note: Check out Chara Armon’s website at mutualflourishing.org to see why she is a speaker you won’t want to miss.

We received a check from Wegmans for $250. We’ll be using this money to fix the beds that are falling apart. To date, we have onions, carrots, radishes, broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage planted and growing well. Lorien Duske’s Girl Scout troop (#41976) came with dirt and compost to plant the potatoes in one of the cages. The potatoes were donated by Lyn Bassett. The caging material was donated by Laurie Young and Dave Donohue. Kay and Bev have planted heirloom sweet potatoes that Kay got from her Aunt. This sweet potato line has been going for almost 100 years. Christi Dunning got us 50 packages of seeds from Seeds of Change which is where we got the tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and zucchini we’ve got growing under our growing lights at home. Joan Mitchell has donated Rosemary, Lemon Balm, Basil, Oregano and Thyme to the garden. We were given the compost from our UUFP neighbor Rich up the street at Becca’s Birds who sells chicken and duck eggs.  Quite a few others have donated their time. I’d say the UUFP Vegetable Garden is doing well thanks to the combined effort of our UUFP community. June 4th at 11am is the next planting date. We could use marigolds, petunias, peppermint and more of any herb or flower that helps a vegetable garden.

Reflections on Mortality and the End of Things  7PrinciplesInWheel

Some of you may be aware that I have been ill and in the hospital but am home now. Hospital visits have a way, don’t they, of focusing our attention on our frailty and mortality? Of course, we all get sick and will be called upon at some point to pay attention to our inevitable decline. I am not being maudlin or fatalistic, just self-aware and practical.

Young or old, illness strikes and when it does, our attitude about life and death come into play. The mind-body connection can be a powerful way to deal with illness. While I am not sure this connection can heal or cure us, we each need to be open to its possibility. We need to have an inner spiritual fortitude, call it a positive mental attitude if that language speaks to you. I prayed for healing in a most eclectic interpretation of that word. I think of it as an internal dialogue with no external answer expected, even if I hoped for “to get by with a little help from my friend” (the Beetles for the younger crowd) …God if you will.

I learned a valuable lesson while in the hospital that can apply to all of us. God, love, the universe helps those who help themselves. We cannot be passive witnesses to our own lives. To quote Emerson,“whatever you do you need courage.” We need that to face our sometimes daunting reality. We can neither be passive or surrender to illness or the problems / challenges we confront.

While in the hospital I received abysmal care and when I finally had enough of bad treatment, I screamed, literally and figuratively and finally got heard. I took control of my treatment, filed complaints against the inattentive abusive Dr. and got results. While I am not recommending that behavior as I became my mother, never a good idea, lol; but I am recommending that we all take responsibility for our lives and take care of ourselves. No one can do a better job of self-care than you. We all need to give ourselves permission to do that. Don’t become a victim to bad medical care, an abusive spouse, a demeaning, bullying boss, disrespectful kids. You have a right to be treated with dignity and respect and to be heard clearly.

Our seven UU principles remind us of our worth and dignity. Taking care of ourselves is empowering.  Try it, you just might like it!

Yours in our shared faith,

Reverend Paul

Book Club June 4, 2016

June 4th Book Club  Screen Shot 2016-05-29 at 6.28.01 PM

The book club met May 7 at the Fellowship and we had a wonderful discussion of Anthony Doerr’s All the Light We Cannot See. If you have not read the book, it is highly recommended.

We decided to read a classic this month, John Steinbeck masterpiece: East of Eden.  It is hard to write a review of this saga.  The book is full of powerfully developed characters, explicit and hidden subplots, spanning sixty years and three generations.  The theme is the struggle between good and evil, a replay of the Cain and Abel story from Genesis in the developing United States.

As usual, if someone has not read, has not finished, or does not like the book (although, I can’t imagine that!!!), come anyway. We will meet at 12 noon, Saturday June 4. If you like, bring your lunch and maybe something to share. Be ready to feed your intellect with our discussion group!! Hope to see some of you there!!!

Quantum Mechanics Guest Speaker: Neil Shea, PhD, Professor of Physics, Kutztown University

Lay Leader: Allan Pallay

Quantum Mechanics is the science of matter at the atomic and sub-atomic scales. The basic starting point for QM is the Uncertainty Principle which places limits on how accurate our observations can be. This gives nature a kind of fuzzy appearance. This is why a particle such as an electron has no well-defined location but may appear to be extended somewhat over space. These conclusions and others have led some to find this image of nature strange. The observations that we make and the conclusions that we draw are perceptions, not reality. The reality is best left to metaphysics.
