The Minister’s Column, February 2020

January started out fairly grim, with Australia literally. We’re now one fifth of the way through the 21st century – hard to believe! And an eventful year awaits us. The impeachment process in Washington should be concluded in the weeks ahead, one way or another. The Iowa caucuses mark the beginning of a new stage of the presidential campaign (which seems to begin the day after the last election – why can’t we compress the process to just a few months, like other nations?). The climate is unlikely to get friendlier without a lot of help from us humans, and do we have enough fingers (and toes) to count all the troubles and conflicts around the world?

I look for tiny signs of beauty, hope, compassion. White Horse Village has been designated a Certified Wildlife Habitat through the National Wildlife Federation. A young man saw me looking stymied and helped me up the curb in front of the Indian grocery store. (I am especially grateful for these micro-kindnesses across lines of gender, generation and race). Dave’s fall on black ice did not result in any real injury, though they weren’t sure about his elbow at first. The January full moon was spectacular, and the paperwhites I had given up on are now growing. About 98% of the young people I ask say, yes, they are registered to vote.

And, eighteen of us showed up at UUFP on a Sunday afternoon to learn about UU the Vote! This values-based multi-faceted program from the Unitarian Universalist Association is intended to encourage, inspire, support and celebrate UU efforts across the country to increase voter turn-out, combat voter suppression, promote the values embedded in our principles and improve the workings of democracy. There is a role and an opportunity for everyone. Locally, our own Trish Rooney has been deeply involved in Fair Districts PA, an effort to end gerrymandering.

February is looking up! Happy Ground Hog Day, St. Bridget’s Day, Candlemas, and Imbolc to you all! May the weather goddess decide she doesn’t need a lot more firewood for the season and so send a gray day for Punxatawny Phil. And may we all do our part to support democracy and bless the world.

Blessings, Kerry

President’s Message, February 2020

“The Eskimo has 52 names for snow because it is important to them: there ought to be as many for love.” ~ Margaret Atwood

With the month of February comes Saint Valentine’s Day. This holiday is recognized as a significant celebration of romance and love. With that being said, I would like to send some special Valentine’s wishes and “show some love” to some people within our fellowship.

The first Valentine goes to CJ Rhoads for all of the great work that she did working with the children and putting together the play for our Christmas Eve service. She held many rehearsals with the children and put together the mouse costumes and stage props. The children did a marvelous job and everyone in the audience was delighted by the story of “Crumbfest”. Thank you, CJ.

The second Valentine goes to Trish Rooney for the work that she did kicking off the “UU the Vote” initiative for our fellow- ship on January 12. The event had 18 people in attendance. The highlight was the education that Trish provided regarding Fair Districts PA. The conversation was lively, and attendees felt more informed about the issue of fair districts and what actions they can take to support this initiative. Trish is working on getting someone from Fair Districts PA to come to our fellowship to provide further information on the issues. Stay tuned for further details. Thank you, Trish. I would be remiss if I did not also thank Kay Price for coordinating the potluck that evening.

The next Valentine goes to the people of our fellowship. We had two special initiatives that culminated on Christmas Eve. The first was to decorate our mitten tree. The tree ended up being fully decorated with hats and mittens and under the tree were baskets filled with more items, including socks. These items were then donated to the Pottstown Cluster. In addition, we had a special collection during our Christmas Eve Service, again with the proceeds going to the Pottstown Cluster. We raised over $600 that night. Now that’s “showing some love!” Thank you to all who donated.

The final update is in regard to our windows. While I am writing this article in mid-January, I am hoping that by the time you read this in the February Sojourner, you will see that our new windows have been installed. I was notified that they would start work on January 27.

In keeping with the theme of St. Valentine’s Days, I will close with one of my favorite quotes from Dr. Seuss: “We are all a little weird, and life’s a little weird, and when we find someone whose weirdness is compatible with ours, we join up with them, and fall in mutual weirdness, and call it love.”

Yours in weirdness, Linda

Silos of Discord
Guest Speaker: Douglas Harrel
Lay Leader: Allan Pallay

Politically and culturally Americans are divided into two camps and constructive dialogue is scarce. Is there anyone who can serve as an honest broker by listening respectfully to both sides and work to heal the rift? Doug makes the case that the practice of the Seven Principles equips UU’s to undertake the task of bridging the divide, and restoring respectful discourse to our public sphere.

Douglas Harrel is a Member of UU Society of Mill Creek, Delaware, and is Winner of the 2015/2016 Dana Greeley UU Sermon Competition

Music That Inspires
Lay Speaker: Lisa Jokiel

Most of us have special songs that have befriended us in good times and in bad. These selections can be hymns, show tunes, classical pieces and others. We will examine several of these, and even sing a few. Please let Lisa know if you have a special choice you would like to have included in the program.

The Next Right Thing Lay
Speaker: Emily Quarles Mowrer

Seth Glier in his song, says that “people need a miracle to do the next right thing.”  In the movie Frozen II, when one of the characters reaches her darkest point, she sings about the importance of moving forward and doing the next right thing as a path through grief. We want our lives to glide smoothly along our five-year-plans; however, as Emily Freeman states in her book, none of us is capable of living in the future. Whether we are grieving, or confused, or angry or stuck, choosing the next right thing is about making the best choice you can make today to move toward a brighter tomorrow.
