President’s Message — February 2023

“Can February March? No, but April May” ~ Unknown.

Even though February is the shortest month, it can also seem like the longest month, depending on how the weather plays out. And so far, our winter can best be described as dreary (hence trying to bring a smile to your face with the opening quote). However, February and March usually hold some surprises for us with some nasty winter storms. It is important to remind everyone, that if our area is impacted by a storm (snow and/or ice), the Board of Directors will decide whether to hold Sunday Services in person on the day before. If in-person services are cancelled, it will be posted on our website and an email will go out. Please note that your safety is important to us. Even if services are being held in person, if you do not feel comfortable driving in the conditions around you, please stay home and join us via Zoom.

With the start of the new year, came some changes to our UUFP family. First, I would like to welcome Meghan Mickle as our new childcare attendant for our nursery. Meghan comes to us with an extensive background in education and we are thrilled to have her. She is in the nursery from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm on Sundays. Please stop in and say hi to her and her little one Hailey. In addition, we have a new Choir Director, Anna Swansun. Anna has a broad background in music, including composition. She has been very generous with her time, volunteering to take on this role. The choir has grown and has never sounded better, thanks to Anna’s expertise.

Our choir is not the only thing that is growing in number. We have had quite a few requests from individuals who would like to become members of the UUFP. If you are interested in becoming a member, please reach out to Miranda Van Horn, head of the Membership Committee to find out more regarding the path to membership. There will be a UU-101 class scheduled in the upcoming weeks for prospective members as well as anyone else who wants to learn more about Unitarian Universalism. Stay tuned for the dates of this class.

Lastly, I would like to address a question that I have been receiving regarding donating to UUFP on-line. More and more people are utilizing that tool for the convenience that it offers. For pledges, you can set up recurring payments, so you never miss a month with your pledge. For Giant Cards, you can pay online and not have to remember to bring a check to the fellowship. The recurring question has to do with the “Fee” that you are asked to see if you would like to add to the total for your transaction. Please note, this fee is a processing fee for any credit card transactions. UUFP is paying that small fee for each credit card transaction. If you chose not to add the cost of the fee to your transaction (and that is understandable), please know that your donation is technically reduced by the fee amount. If you would like to avoid this fee, you can set up payment so that it comes directly from your bank account. (This is how I do it and I have had no issues.) Regardless of how you donate to UUFP (cash, check, online), your donation is greatly appreciated.

With gratitude, Linda K.

Sunday Service — February 5, 2023

The Power of Awe Guest Speaker: Rev. Kim Wilson, UU Minister: Awe imbues us with a different sense of ourselves — one that is smaller, more humble and part of a greater wholeness. It can also be a powerful source of healing. We explore the connections between experiences of awe and altruism, a feeling of attunement with humanity and other positive effects on our mental and spiritual well-being. Sunday Service — February 26, 2023

Try a Little Tenderness. Guest Speaker: Rev. Beth Marshall This morning’s service lifts up the work of Father Gregory who serves the people of Homeboy Industries in Los Angeles, CA. His work with former gang members is the embodiment of the compassionate work that many of us only dream of doing; with profound implications for the rest of us. How might we challenge ourselves to see beyond that which we don’t understand, to the tenderness of the human being within. The work of Father Gregory shows the power of compassion and tenderness to deal with some of societies’ toughest problems. Coffee Hour follows the Service

Christmas Ornament Making

A good time was had by all Saturday morning Dec 3rd when kids and grownups gathered to make beautiful salt dough and felt ornaments for Christmas. Thank you Miss Monica for planning and organizing this fun event! Also thanks to the “moms” Sue M and Kim K for their help, and Anna and Brandon who arrived early and were quickly put to work!

What a wonderful way to start the holiday season!

President’s Message, January 2023

“What the New Year brings to you will depend a great deal on what you bring to the new year.” ~ Vern McLellan
The New Year usually brings a time of reflection about the year that just ended and the year that is just beginning. There were many things to be grateful for as we closed out 2022. Thanks to Monica Buckley and her merry band of elves (of all ages), there was a very successful craft ornament making day. The creations were proudly displayed in the fellowship on our two trees. And thanks to all who participated in decorating the trees. I also want to thank Miranda Van Horn for coordinating our Christmas Eve service and volunteering as choir director. And speaking of music, a great big thank you goes to our pianist, Carly Schell. It is great to see that people stay after the service to hear her beautiful closing music. She and her music are quite an asset to our Sunday Services.

It is also important to note that the success of the UUFP over the past year is due to the efforts of, well……, everyone. I realize that I tend to thank individuals who lead or accomplish unique things, however, it is the people behind the scenes that really keep the fellowship going. So, thanks to all who served as greeters for Sunday Services, brought food for coffee hour and potluck, washed the dishes and cleaned the kitchen after coffee hour, collected and took out the trash and recycling to the curb on Sundays (and brought the cans back on Mondays), drove individuals in need of rides, and did other random acts of kindness that kept our fellowship functioning and feeling like a family. While these tasks might not be glamorous, they are necessary and your efforts are greatly appreciated.

As we start 2023, there are two items that we will hopefully address quickly. The first is that we hope to fill the nursery/childcare position very soon. All candidates are being vetted by the “Mom Interview Team” comprised of Monica Buckley, Kim Kulp and Sue Merkel. Keep your fingers crossed that we find someone soon. The second item is that we need to obtain a new sign for the front lawn of our fellowship. Someone hit the pole on the corner of the property and it fell and destroyed our sign. We are filing a claim with our insurance so hopefully we will get some financial support to offset the cost of the replacement.

I close by putting out a request. If anyone is thinking that they would like to do just a little bit more for the fellowship, please think about joining a committee or maybe becoming a member of the board. New committee and board members are always appreciated because they bring fresh ideas and diverse perspectives. If you have any questions or want to discuss what it might entail, please reach out to the respective Committee Chair or me.

Wishing you all health and happiness for the New Year.
In gratitude,
Linda
