The Life, Wisdom and Legacy of Black Elk

Speaker: Lisa Jokiel

Black Elk, a Lakota Sioux leader and healer whose quotations are found in the Readings section of our hymnal, lived from 1863 to 1950. He died on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota. “Nicholas” Black Elk witnessed the
transformation of Native American life from freedom to persecution to occupation. He was present at the Battle of Little Bighorn and the Massacre of Wounded Knee. How are his life and his teachings still deeply
relevant today?
